MySALT® FAQs

What is the best way to use MySALT®?

Use MySALT the same way you use regular salt. It is fantastic sprinkled on foods and used in your recipes. Adding MySALT to low sodium products is a great way to boost the flavor of otherwise bland food. While MySALT is delicious, it is meant to be consumed on foods and not on its own, so don't taste it or eat it straight from the bottle.

What makes MySALT® different from other salt substitutes?

MySALT is completely sodium free and has the added dietary benefit of two nutrients, potassium and lysine, which are essential to good health. Food scientists have searched for decades for an alternative to salt. Potassium chloride is the closest known alternative. While it does have a salty flavor, it leaves a bitter, metallic aftertaste. Our process masks that aftertaste while highlighting the salty flavor.

Does MySALT® really taste like salt?

To most people, yes it does. That said, not everyone likes everything. People have different taste buds -- different likes and dislikes. We have customers who cannot tell the difference between MySALT and salt. Some think it is not as salty – while others say it is saltier. But most agree it is much better than any other salt substitute.

Why is potassium important?

Potassium is a very important nutrient because it helps to lower blood pressure, prevent bone loss, and reduce the risk of developing kidney stones. Potassium appears to blunt the blood-pressure-raising effects of salt, at least in part by causing the body to excrete more sodium into the urine. The National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine found the case for potassium so compelling they raised the recommendations from 3,500mg per day to 4,700mg. In addition to being a delicious salt substitute, MySALT is a great way to add potassium to the diet.

What is L-lysine, and why do we need it?

L-lysine is an essential amino acid needed for growth and to help maintain nitrogen balance in the body. Adding lysine to the diet helps ensure adequate absorption of calcium and the formation of collagen for bone, cartilage and connective tissues. Because lysine interferes with the replication of herpes viruses, doctors often prescribe it to people with cold sores.

Persons on a potassium restricted diet should consult their physician before using any salt substitute. MySALT contains 356mg of potassium per 1/4 teaspoon. One serving is similar to a small banana. MySALT does not contain phosphorus. It does not contain iodine.
